Muscle Toning You Can Actually Feel
There are plenty of body products that promise to lift, firm and tone. The JOVS EMS Toning Shorts are different because they aren't simply treating the appearance of the skin.
They're making the muscles underneath it contract.
EMS — electrical muscle stimulation — sends controlled electrical impulses through the skin to the motor nerves that activate muscle. Those signals cause involuntary muscle contractions in the areas positioned over the shorts' electrodes.
JOVS combines two large treatment zones in one wearable device: one designed to stimulate the gluteal muscles and another positioned for pelvic-floor stimulation.
What Can EMS Actually Do for You?
Electrical muscle stimulation sounds complicated, but the basic idea is surprisingly simple. Your muscles normally contract when electrical signals from your nervous system activate the motor nerves controlling them. EMS introduces electrical impulses from outside the body, stimulating those motor nerves and causing the muscle fibers they control to contract.
So yes — when you're wearing the JOVS shorts and you feel your glutes or pelvic-floor muscles contracting, the muscles really are working without you having to even think about it.
Why Put EMS Into Shorts?
Traditional EMS often means placing individual electrode pads over the muscles you want to stimulate. Placement matters, coverage is limited by pad size, and some systems require conductive gel.
JOVS builds the electrodes directly into a close-fitting garment. The result is a much larger treatment area that stays positioned over the glutes and pelvic region while you move, exercise, work or relax.
There are no individual pads to reposition and no conductive gel required for normal use.
That convenience matters. The best home technology isn't necessarily the device with the most impressive specification sheet. It's the one you'll actually use consistently.
So What About Those 4,000 Squats and 50,000 Kegels?
JOVS says a 20-minute session can provide muscle stimulation equivalent to 4,000 squats or 50,000 Kegels.* We admit it: when we saw those numbers, our first reaction was, Really?
So we looked into the science behind EMS.
Here's what matters. EMS devices don't stimulate a muscle once every few seconds the way you might perform repetitions at the gym. They deliver rapid electrical pulses. Depending on the stimulation parameters, those pulses cause thousands of muscle fibers to twitch or combine into stronger, sustained contractions. EMS also recruits motor units differently from voluntary exercise, allowing many fibers within the stimulated area to be activated together.
That's how EMS can generate an enormous amount of muscular activation in a relatively short period of time — and where the attention-grabbing comparisons to thousands of exercise repetitions come from.
The much more useful question is whether EMS itself works.
And that's where the research gets interesting. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation has been extensively studied for muscle activation and strengthening. A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing EMS with conventional strength training found similar improvements in muscle strength when training volume was matched. Other research supports using electrical stimulation alongside voluntary exercise and rehabilitation.
Where EMS Makes the Most Sense
For most people, we think the strongest case for EMS is as an addition to movement and exercise rather than a replacement for them, and experts agree.
Activate Targeted Muscles
EMS creates contractions in the muscles beneath the electrodes, providing targeted stimulation to the glutes and pelvic-floor region without requiring you to perform the corresponding exercise.
Supplement Your Workout
Use EMS separately or alongside an active fitness routine to provide additional stimulation to targeted muscles without adding another set of squats, lunges or hip lifts.
Build Strength & Muscle Function
Research on neuromuscular electrical stimulation supports improvements in muscle strength and function. Results depend on stimulation intensity, training protocol, consistency and the individual.
Make Consistency Easier
Because the shorts can stimulate the targeted muscles while you're relaxing or going about other activities, it's easier to add regular muscle stimulation without adding another workout to your schedule.
One Pair of Shorts. Two Targeted Muscle Zones.
JOVS built separate stimulation areas into the shorts so you can target two very different goals.
Glute Stimulation Area
Large electrodes are positioned across the glutes to create repeated contractions of the muscles responsible for much of the shape, lift and firmness of the buttocks.
Pelvic Stimulation Area
A second electrode area is positioned to stimulate muscles associated with the pelvic floor, giving the shorts a function that goes beyond cosmetic body toning.
Adjustable Intensity
Start at a comfortable level where you can feel the muscles contracting and gradually increase intensity as you become accustomed to the sensation.
A Routine You Can Stick With
JOVS recommends 20-minute sessions. Its current first-use guidance suggests starting with 2–3 sessions per week and allowing the muscles time to recover between intensive sessions.

And Then There's the Pelvic Floor
This is what makes the JOVS shorts more interesting than a typical “butt toning” device.
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that supports the pelvic organs and contributes to bladder control, core stability and sexual function. Like other skeletal muscles, pelvic-floor muscles can be strengthened through repeated contractions.
Kegel exercises rely on voluntarily identifying and contracting those muscles. JOVS uses electrical stimulation to produce muscle contractions through its pelvic stimulation area.
JOVS specifically positions the shorts for pelvic-floor strengthening, bladder-control support and postpartum recovery.
Think of the shorts as another tool for pelvic-floor strengthening, not a replacement for regular exercise. They can be incorporated into an existing strengthening routine and used alongside voluntary pelvic-floor exercises. If you're dealing with a specific pelvic-floor condition, recovering from childbirth, or have concerns about urinary or pelvic health, it's always a good idea to check with your doctor or pelvic-floor specialist about the best approach for you.
Twenty Minutes Doesn't Have to Mean Twenty More Minutes at the Gym
You can feel the contractions, but you don't have to perform an exercise for the electrical stimulation to occur.
That means a session can happen while you're reading, watching television or simply relaxing at home.
Or take the opposite approach and use EMS alongside your normal fitness routine.
Either way, the wearable design removes much of the setup normally associated with electrical muscle stimulation.

What About the Visible Results?
JOVS markets the shorts for visible glute lifting and toning and reports results from its own user testing. We think it's important to separate those product-specific marketing claims from the broader independent research supporting EMS as a muscle-training technology.
The independent research tells us that electrically stimulated muscle contractions can contribute to improvements in strength and muscle function. Exactly how much visible reshaping an individual gets from these particular shorts will depend on factors including baseline muscle development, stimulation intensity, frequency of use, exercise, body composition and individual response.

What JOVS Customers Are Saying
“After wearing these shorts for about a year, my butt is toned and my pelvic floor is strong, thanks JOVS.”
— Jennifer S.
“Love these shorts. They actually work like they say they're going to. Worth the 300 bucks. I am a very suspicious person in the first place. I usually do not take chances because every time I do it always bites me in the ass, but let me tell you now — these are worth it. I'm about to go buy a second pair just in case they ever go out! Highly recommend.”

Who Is This For?
For Your Client
- Wants to strengthen and tone the glutes
- Is interested in adding EMS to an existing fitness routine
- Wants targeted muscle stimulation without adding more joint-loading exercises
- Is interested in pelvic-floor muscle training
- Wants a wearable alternative to individual EMS pads
- Values a home device that's easy to use consistently
For the Esthetician
Body treatments can address the skin and appearance of the treatment area. EMS gives you something different to discuss with clients: the muscle underneath it.
That makes the JOVS shorts particularly relevant for professionals offering body treatments, body contouring services or wellness-focused home-care recommendations.
Just as importantly, understanding the difference between legitimate EMS science and exaggerated marketing gives you a much better way to answer the questions your clients are already asking.
What to Tell Your Client
Choosing the Right Size Is Important
Proper fit helps keep the EMS contact areas positioned against the glutes and pelvic-floor region where they're designed to deliver stimulation. Choose a size that fits securely and keeps the electrodes in close contact with the body without being uncomfortably tight.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is EMS?
EMS stands for electrical muscle stimulation. Electrical impulses stimulate motor nerves, causing the associated muscles to contract without requiring the contraction to begin as a voluntary movement.
Do the muscles really contract?
Yes. Muscle contraction is the fundamental mechanism behind EMS. As intensity increases, you should be able to feel the targeted muscles contracting.
Is 20 minutes really equivalent to 4,000 squats?
JOVS uses “4,000 squats” as a contraction-equivalent marketing comparison. We would not interpret that to mean a 20-minute session produces every physiological benefit you could receive from performing 4,000 conventional squats. What matters more is that EMS produces real muscular contractions and has independent research supporting its ability to improve muscle strength and function.
Does EMS replace exercise?
No. Conventional exercise provides benefits EMS alone cannot duplicate, including movement training, coordination, mechanical loading of bone and connective tissue, and cardiovascular benefits. EMS makes more sense as another form of muscle stimulation and as an adjunct to an active lifestyle.
Can I exercise while wearing the shorts?
The wearable design allows EMS to be incorporated into activity as well as used while resting. Start at a comfortable intensity and become familiar with the stimulation before combining higher settings with exercise.
How often should I use them?
JOVS's current first-use guidance recommends beginning with 15–20 minutes and says 2–3 sessions per week are sufficient when starting. Follow the instructions supplied with your device and allow your muscles appropriate recovery time.
Do I need conductive gel?
JOVS designed the shorts for gel-free use. JOVS notes that people with particularly dry skin may find a small amount of unscented body lotion improves conductivity and comfort.
What areas do the shorts target?
The shorts have separate electrode areas designed to target the gluteal and pelvic-floor regions.
How many intensity levels are there?
There are eight adjustable intensity levels. Beginners should start low and increase the stimulation gradually as they become accustomed to the sensation.
What about fast-twitch muscle fibers?
Electrical stimulation recruits motor units differently from normal voluntary exercise. Research describes conventional NMES recruitment as relatively nonselective and synchronous rather than following exactly the same recruitment pattern as voluntary contractions. That's one reason EMS has been studied for muscle strengthening. We would not, however, reduce that physiology to a claim that EMS simply “turns on every fast-twitch fiber.”
Does EMS need to operate above 100 Hz to work?
No. There isn't a universal 100 Hz threshold below which EMS suddenly becomes ineffective. Effective NMES protocols use different frequencies, pulse widths and intensities. JOVS does not currently publish the complete stimulation parameters for these shorts on its product page, so we won't invent a specification they haven't provided.
Why Buy JOVS From California Skincare Supply?
New beauty and wellness technologies arrive with some pretty spectacular marketing claims.
We don't think skincare professionals need another retailer repeating those claims back to them.
When something catches our attention, we want to know why it works, what the independent research says, where the manufacturer may be getting ahead of the evidence and whether there's still a good reason to recommend the technology.
That's exactly what happened with these shorts.
We questioned the thousands-of-squats claim. We dug into the research on electrical muscle stimulation. And what we found made us more interested in EMS — not less.
Because you don't need the hype when the underlying technology is already this interesting.
