Why Red and Near-Infrared Light?
Red and near-infrared light therapy works through a process known as photobiomodulation. Rather than heating or damaging tissue, specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by cells and can influence biological processes involved in cellular energy production, circulation, inflammatory signaling and tissue repair.
That's the same basic science behind the growing use of red and near-infrared light in skincare, recovery and other areas of wellness.
The JOVS wearable contains 49 LEDs delivering 660 nm red and 850 nm near-infrared light across the treatment area. But the two wavelengths used by JOVS don't behave exactly the same way.
Red Light
660 nm red light is more strongly absorbed in superficial tissue. Red-light photobiomodulation has been widely investigated for its effects on cellular activity, collagen production, skin health and tissue repair.
That makes it particularly relevant to the skin and other tissues closer to the surface.
Near-Infrared Light
850 nm near-infrared light travels farther into tissue than visible red light. Near-infrared wavelengths are therefore commonly used in photobiomodulation when the intended effects extend beyond the skin's surface.
You won't see 850 nm light glowing because near-infrared is outside the range of light visible to the human eye.
Think of 660 nm red light as concentrating more of its energy closer to the surface, while 850 nm near-infrared light travels farther into tissue. Combining the two allows light therapy to interact with tissue at different depths.
Rather than limiting the light to one small location, the LED arrangement is designed to provide coverage across a larger portion of the lower abdomen, pelvic and gluteal regions.
